Aquablation Q & A

What is Aquablation?

Aquablation is an innovative, minimally invasive treatment for BPH in men, a condition causing an enlarged prostate gland and often unpleasant symptoms.

This treatment is safe and effective for men struggling with lower urinary tract symptoms. It’s a one-of-a-kind procedure that uses heat-free waterjet technology controlled by robotic precision to resect targeted prostate tissues and ease bothersome BPH symptoms.

Which urinary problems can Aquablation help treat?

Aquablation at Mission City Urology can eliminate the following symptoms of BPH:

  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Trouble beginning to urinate
  • Weak urine stream
  • Urinating often at night
  • Urine stream that starts and stops
  • Inability to completely empty your bladder
  • Dribbling after urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)

These symptoms may appear slowly, gradually worsening over time when left untreated.

How does Aquablation work?

Aquablation uses precise, incision-free, robotic technology with the help of ultrasound imaging to remove excess prostate tissue in individuals with BPH. It uses heat-free waterjet technology to eliminate targeted tissues, while preserving urinary continence, erections, and the ability to ejaculate.

Waterjet ablation combines cystoscopy with ultrasound imaging, allowing Dr. Satsangi to see your entire prostate gland in real time. This optimizes the procedure’s precision and accuracy.

Is Aquablation right for me?

Dr. Satsangi discusses your symptoms and medical history to determine if you’re a candidate for Aquablation treatment. He completes a physical exam, digital rectal exam, and may recommend urine testing, blood tests, bladder function testing, a 24-hour voiding diary, transrectal ultrasound, prostate biopsy, cystoscopy using a thin tube, or other diagnostic tests.

What should I expect during and after the procedure?

Before undergoing Aquablation, you receive a general anesthetic or a spinal anesthetic. Dr. Satsangi uses innovative robotic technology to carefully guide a device into your urethra.

The device releases powerful jets of water to resect excess prostate tissue, removing parts of the diseased gland with minimal risks and downtime. You may be able to head home the same day as the procedure, but might need to wear a catheter for a short period of time.

After recovering from the procedure, follow up with Dr. Satsangi to ensure the treatment’s effectiveness and lasting results.
