Erectile Dysfunction Q & A

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to have or maintain an erection. Most men occasionally have trouble with erections, often due to common problems like stress and fatigue. However, you should seek help if you regularly experience erectile dysfunction.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Many different health conditions cause erectile dysfunction, such as:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Low testosterone
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Neurologic disease
  • Diabetes
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Obesity

Of all the conditions on this list, poor blood flow, often due to a cardiovascular disease called atherosclerosis, is the top cause of erectile dysfunction. Atherosclerosis occurs when cholesterol plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood into your penis.

Without treatment, the plaque enlarges and blocks blood flow. That causes erectile dysfunction because you need healthy circulation to have an erection.

How is erectile dysfunction treated?

Dr. Satsangi first identifies and treats any underlying health condition that might cause your erectile dysfunction. Then he offers treatments such as:

Oral medications

The prescription medications available for erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra®), tadalafil (Cialis®), vardenafil (Levitra®), and avanafil (Stendra®), work together with your body, causing an erection only when you’re sexually aroused.

Injected and intraurethral medications

A medication called alprostadil causes an erection that lasts about 30 minutes or until you climax. Dr. Satsangi can teach you how to inject alprostadil into the side of your penis, or you could use an alprostadil suppository that you insert into the urethra.

GAINSWave® treatment

GAINSWave is a medical device that uses pulsed sound waves to remove existing plaque and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels. As a result, blood flow to the penis improves, and you regain the ability to have strong erections.

Hormone replacement therapy

When low testosterone causes erectile dysfunction, Dr. Satsangi prescribes hormone replacement therapy to restore normal hormone levels.

Vacuum erection device

To use this method, you place a plastic tube over your penis. Then, a pump creates a vacuum that boosts blood flow and causes an erection. You put a plastic ring onto your penis to sustain the erection.

Penile implants

You can choose to have Dr. Satsangi surgically insert a semi-rigid or inflatable implant into your penis. When you want to have sex, you bend the semi-rigid device or activate the inflatable implant to create an erection.
